Murcia Mini Guide Situated near the Costa Brava, Murcia is the regional capital - a fine modern city with excellent shops and many interesting places to visit, including plenty of historical monuments and museums. It is a university town with a high student population and plenty of good nightlife. The Cathedral de Santa Maria, takes centre stage in the city and was built in 1394 on the site of an old mosque; however there's not a hint of 14th century in this splendid western facade. The original Gothic front suffered irreparable damage from a flood in 1735, and was subsequently renovated in the Baroque style. Here you can climb the tower to obtain an impressive view of the city. Many people travel to Murcia to take advantage of the wide range of excellent shopping available here. As well as many small art shops and boutiques, the Corte Inglés is one of the most popular shopping plazas and has a reputation for extensive variety and quality. |
